ALZHEIMER’S DESEASE

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease or AD as it is better known in the medical fields is a type of neurodegenerative disease characterized by perceiving deterioration along with the weakening of regular lifestyle activities as well as neuropsychiatry symptoms or change in the behavioral attitudes. This state is considered as the most universal cause of dementia. The disease is named after the German psychiatrist Dr. Alois Alzheimer who interviewed the 55 year old female patient Mrs. Auguste. The doctor showed her several objects and asked her after a while about what she actually saw for which the patient turned absolutely blank. Initially the doctor recorded her behavior as amnesic writing disorder and eventually she thus became the first ever patient to be identified with the Alzheimer’s desease.

Different types of Alzheimer’s disease: Many doctors and researchers have categorized this disease into several types known as: Early onset of Alzheimer’s disease which is the rare type of this desease wherein the patient is diagnosed with disease before the age of 65. The other type is Late onset dementia which is the most common type of the disease which generally occurs after 65 years of age. The last type is known as Familial Alzheimer’s disease-FAD which is the type of this disease entirely inherited.

Causes: Age is the most vital cause of this desease. This disease is complex disease and there are several explanations about its causes. The disease starts damaging the brain years before its symptoms appear. Most of the scientists believe that this disease initiates with building up of beta amyloid protein in the brain. Besides this, genetic disorders, brain damage, estrogen, smoking, typical lifestyle, education and environmental disorders may also cause this desease.

Symptoms: The most common symptoms include: confusion, disturbed short-term memory, problems with attentiveness and spatial orientation, changes in personality, language difficulties and abrupt unexpected change in moods. However, every patient is not supposed to experience the same symptoms.

Diagnosis: Though the disease is very common, it often remains unrecognized or rather misdiagnosed during its early phase. The medical professionals as well as the family members usually mistakenly consider its symptoms as common age related problems only. However, certain disorders may even result in dementia, like depression, malnutrition and drug interaction may be curable but not the Alzheimer’s disease anyway.

Treatment: This disease has practically no cure as yet, however, the currently available medication can provide comparatively little indicative benefits for some patients but the improvement in the symptoms is very slow.
