CELIEC DESEASE |
|||||||||
| Introduction: Celiac Disease is the disorder of
digestive system that damages the small intestine and hinders the absorption
of nutrients from foods. Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity is the
autoimmune inflammatory disease that is believed to damage the small
finger-like projections that line the small intestine. If the people having
Celiac disease eat foods that contain gluten – the protein found in wheat
and other grains may ignite the autoimmune reaction which in turn shortens
and ultimately compresses the villi. The unhealthy villi lead malnourishment
to the patient, irrespective of quantity of food eaten. Non-adherence to
celiac desease may end up in seriously continuing conditions like cancer,
osteoporosis, anemia and seizures and may also turn to life threatening. Types of Celiac deseases: There are several different types of this disease which include: autoimmune disease, digestive desease, chronic digestive disease, inflammatory bowel disease, under-diagnosed conditions and intestinal conditions. Causes: Though the outline of heredity is complex, celiac disease may run in families and is said to have the genetic base. The kind of heredity outline that this deseases follows is known as multi-factorial and according to the researchers, various factors combine to cause this disease. The patient having genetic predisposition gets triggered by the environmental acts to stimulate their immune system resulting in the occurrence of this disease becoming active for the first time. Symptoms: Symptoms may or may not exhibit in digestive system and some patients affected with the desease may not experience symptoms. However, common symptoms include: anemia, weight fluctuation, persistent diarrhoea and constipation, failure to thrive in infants or belated growth, general fatigue, neuropathy symptoms like burning – tingling – numbness in hands and feet, loss of sensation in hands and feet, numbness or reduced feeling in the face and body; oily bad-smelling stools, stomach disorders, cramping, gas, distention, bloating and vomiting. Diagnosis: This disease can not be traced sometimes as there are different ways of its appearance. The symptoms of this disease are similar to many other conditions like irritating bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulosis, intestinal infections, persistent fatigue syndrome and depression. Often the condition may continue without diagnosis for extended period and the patient accepts this general feeling of illness as normal which leads to even delay in recognizing and treating the ailment. Treatment: Gluten-free diet is the only treatment for this desease, and the diet has to be followed for the rest of the life.
