| Introduction: Gum disease is also known as
periodontal disease. The term Periodontal actually means Around the Tooth.
Gum disease is characterized as the inflammation of the structures that
surround and support the teeth. It basically occurs due to the serious
bacterial infections which devastates the gums as well as the surrounding
tissues of the mouth. If this ailment is left unattended for long, it may
lead to destroy the jaw bones, gums, covering of the roots of the teeth and
membranes of the teeth too. It is believed to be one of the most common
causes of tooth fall. Gum desease is also the risk factor for coronary heart
disease and preterm low birth weight. Types: There are various types of gum diseases that are usually categorized by the stages of the typical progression of the disease at the time of its evaluations. However, some of the most commonly known gum diseases include: Gingivitis, Mild Periodontitis and Moderate to advanced Periodontitis. Causes: In majority of the cases, building-up of bacteria and plaque are the prime cause of occurring gum deseases like various other oral health ailments. The plaque, in fact, builds-up the major cause of gum disease. However, other probable reasons that usually cause various gum ailments may include: genetics, improper oral hygiene, frequent sticking of food particles in the gums, mouth breathing habits, poor nutritional diets or deficit of vitamin C, smoking habits, autoimmune or systemic diseases, diabetes, hormonal change in the body, constant compressing and grinding of teeth and several medications. Symptoms: The most commonly reported or found symptoms of the gum desease are: red, swollen or tender gums, bleeding while brushing teeth, receding of gums, teeth loosing or separating, continual odorous breath, unfit dentures, puss between teeth and gums and change in bit and jaw alignment. However, the symptoms may often resemble other conditions or medical disorders. Diagnosis: The gum diseases are generally diagnosed on the basis of complete history and requisite physical examinations of the patient. X-rays of affected teeth or gum area may be insisted for properly diagnosing and ascertaining the line of treatment for the ailment. Treatment: Appropriate line of treatment is based on the reports of the X-ray and other related examinations of the condition of the gums. In general, the treatment of gums include: elimination of plaque, standard yet effective medications and in some typical serious cases even the surgery is advised.
