PARKINSON’S DESEASE |
|||||||||
| Introduction: Parkinson’s disease –PD is the
neurodegenerative disorder that causes slowed movements, tremors, rigidity
and various other symptoms. The term neurodegenerative refers to the
degeneration or death of the neurons that are the kind of cells present in
the human brain and are responsible of controlling all the brain activities.
This desease occurs when neurons or nerve cells present in the brain part
known as substantia nigra degenerate or die off. The brain‘s usual control
on the routine movements are disturbed when these cells are lost and results
in the person to experience slowed movements, stiffness or rigidity or
partial facial paralysis, weakness and tremors. Causes and symptoms: The specific cause of this disease is not yet known. Besides old age factor, there are certain well accepted risk factors that include exposure to pesticides or herbicides, rural lifestyles and drinking of well water. Some other factors include welding and exposure to manganese or environmental toxins. Orthostatic hypotension or loss of blood pressure in the standing posture causing giddiness and seizures, painful foot cramps, Micrographia or reduced handwriting, diminished volume of voice, diminished facial expressions, excess sweating, constipation, smelling problems, impotency, salivating, disturbed sleep, depression, anxiety, panic phobia and late stage dementia are some other symptoms of this disease. Diagnosis: With the help of proper neurological examinations, testing movements, coordination, reflexes as well as some other functional features, this disease could be diagnosed. Treatment: Though there are no specific treatment plans have yet been proved to be effective on this disease, certain research studies suggest that coenzyme Q10 may provide little relief to this desease. Levodopa is the best medication which substitutes dopamine deficiency in the brain. It is also claimed that two medications used for treating the disease are selegiline and dopamine agonists which may help slowing down the disease effect to some extent, but this has not yet been openly accepted. Anyway, the treatment for the disease is complex for quite some reasons. The PD is considered as the progressive disease getting worse over a period of time hence the medications and the doses that effect better during the early stage of the desease prove to be less effective in the later stage. Brain surgery is also an ideal treatment option in the late stage Parkinson’s disease.
